Elderly gentleman spoon-feeds his wife ice cream and the internet can't handle it

When it comes to nurturing long-term relationships, it’s the small things that count. The cup of tea made in the early hours, the inane chat on WhatsApp, the bear hug that says I Love You.

In the vein of these everyday acts of trivial heroics, one pensioner’s gesture really stood out.

When Pastor Brent Kelley took his family to a drive-thru restaurant on a hot day in the city of Franklin, Tennessee, this week, he noticed a man in his 80s spoon-feeding ice cream to his elderly wife.

“So today, I took the kids to the pool and we stopped for ice cream on the way home,” he wrote, in a post on the Love What Really Matters Facebook page.

“When I got my ice cream and pulled out, I realized that this elderly man beside me was sitting outside his car door, spoon feeding his wife ice cream who also looked in her late eighties.

“He draped a towel over her and slowly fed his bride in the 98 degree temperature. It was a beautiful display of love.”

Kelley snapped a photo of the scene (above) and his description of the simple yet tender moment quickly went viral, capturing the imagination of thousands.

With over 100,000 likes at the time of writing, people rushed to chime in with their own stories of true and unassuming love.

“As a nurse I see this kind of love once in a while,” one woman wrote. “I had an elderly lady that was admitted for a couple of months. Her elderly husband came in every morning did her hair ( curled it with a curling iron) while playing her favourite music. He told us she used to love making her self beautiful so he wanted to continue that for her when she could no longer do it herself. True love is sweet.”

“I worked in a photo lab and would have this elderly man come in once a week and need help making copies of his pictures,” another person recalled. “His wife had passed more than 10 years prior but he would always tell me about his ‘spitfire of a redhead’ and how he had no regrets because he made it a point to hug her and tell her he loved her at least once a day, even when they were fighting. He would still tear up talking about her. It was the sweetest and most loving thing to hear him talk about her.”

“My mom and step- dad had that kind of love,” read another tale of everyday compassion. “She was in a nursing home, he visited daily. They ate breakfast, lunch and dinner, kiss each other goodnight. He'd drive home and repeat it again the next day. When he could no longer drive after a heart attack, he asked to be her roommate at the home, so they could be together. And so ever day they kissed good morning and kissed goodnight each night.”

Other couples played tagged each other in the comments section and asked, “Will you feed me ice cream in 50 years’ time?”

It just goes to show – a little love and ice cream can get you an awful long way in life...
