Anyone for a frog shake?

Peru hero.jpg

We’ve seen some out-there smoothie flavours but even exotic açai berries and galangal root pale in comparison to amphibians.

The proprietress of a Peruvian juice stand in Lima has admitted to putting frogs in her milkshakes and juices for the past 15 years. The enterprising woman claims juice extracted from frogs – which are harvested at a high altitude from freshwater Lake Titicaca – can make the body strong, soothe fatigue and be an effective tonic for bones and eyes. Once extracted, the juice is combined with up to 20 different types of fruit and, if the customer should so desire, wine. The juice stand is doing a roaring trade, whizzing up some 80 frogs per day. Indeed, frog juice has proved so popular with locals some confess to being unable to start their day without one.
