Artist creates stunning fine art portraits of Disney Princesses

Things have gotten a little silly with Disney Princesses being re-imagined, haven't they?

But don't let previous renditions of Ariel, Cinderella and Mulan, be they hot dogs or hipster, make you lose hope.

Las Vegas-based artist Heather Theurer is putting the beauty back into Disney by creating renaissance-style paintings of female characters.

“I’d grown up loving Disney films, and I’d always wanted to be an artist, but I never quite put the two together,” Theurer told MTV News.

When a Disney employee saw her work at San Diego Comic-Con five years ago, he asked whether she’d ever thought about painting Disney characters in her classic portrait style.

“I told him I hadn’t, but hey, I was up for it, so what the heck, I’d give it a try. Over the next couple of years…I fell in love with the process and now I have so many ideas for all the Disney characters that I’d need a 72-hour day for the next several years to finish them all.”

Theurer uses theme-songs and key moments from the films to inspire her compositions of Cinderella, Merida from Brave, Frozen's Elsa and Anna and more.

She also likes to keep an element of mystery in her work by hiding other characters in her brushstrokes such as The Beast in her portrait of Belle and Mushu in her painting of Mulan.

As for what she's working on next. “Alice in Wonderland is seeing some paint [next],” she says.
