Artist imagines iconic Disney animals as human characters for a very good reason

Disney have always had a knack for making their animal characters as relatable as their prince and princesses.

You only have to go by the successes of The Lion King and Lady and the Tramp to realise the animation company is responsible for some of the most iconic animal characters on screen. So what would they look like in human form?

That's exactly what Pugletto, an artist from Wisconsin, USA, has imagined and they're absolutely spot on, particularly because she thought long and hard about their origins and the time in which they're set in.

"I was actually scrolling through Deviantart one day and just got really frustrated about the amount of Simbas with white skin and flowing red hair," Pugletto, 24, said to American Cosmopolitan.

"The way I see it, is The Lion King is a story that takes place in Africa... [so] I reimagined the characters as humans the way they would look if they were from Africa."

Her human visualisations of the 90s hit was so successful, she decided to do the same for other iconic Disney animals, including the beloved lady and tramp from Lady and the Tramp and the Duchess and Thomas O'Malley from Aristocats.

We got in touch with Pugletto to find out how she went about deciding their 'human' features, which as you can see below, she has brilliantly mastered.

"I'm Mexican-American. Disney has never (that I know of) really conveyed or told any Latino stories so far to date. In our culture especially, there's a lot of pressure on young women to find "nice" guys that our parents approve of. I went ahead and played with it and thought sure, this is a story works for it just fine."

"With Duchess and O'Malley - I played with O'Malley's American accent and just went ahead and made him bi-racial. A black Irish man from New York probably, moved to France, meets this French lady. I'm not entirely sure what was going on in my head, because looking back, I probably would've drawn them completely different now. Who knows? Maybe I will."
