This is how the Great British Bake Off will change when it moves to Channel 4

This Christmas marks the very last time that The Great British Bake Off will air on BBC One. As of 2017, it will move to its new home on Channel 4 – which left some GBBO fans (yes, us included) pretty upset. They were worried their beloved baking show would be forced to undergo a lot of changes, and that it would lose all of its teatime cosiness in the process.

Now Paul Hollywood has spoken out about the show’s Channel 4 reboot – and he has said that he’s been involved in a series of “long talks” with Love Productions about it all.

Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show, Hollywood said: “The Bake Off won’t change in the sense that the format will stay exactly the same, the tent will stay the same, the challenges and really the bakers [will not change].

“Ultimately, it comes down to when the bakers get in the tent next year, then it will be a special thing. I’m really excited about it and I think it will do a great job; I’m going to make sure that we keep it the same.”

You hear that, Bake Off fans? Nothing’s going to change. Except for the fact that it’ll have adverts now. And the fact that they’re replacing Mel and Sue. And, you know, the fact that our beloved Mary Berry has quit her position as judge.

At least we’ll still have the white tents, the cake tins, and Paul, eh?

Hollywood went on to add that he may have been painted as the villain of the big #Breadxit (he’s the only member of the original team to sign a contract with Channel 4), but he stressed that it’s unfair to have “all the guns pointed at me”.

“It was between the production company and the BBC and they then moved to Channel 4 and obviously it came down to ... my job was still there and I didn’t want to lose my job,” he said. “I love doing what I do.”

Hollywood added that he had sought Berry’s blessing before committing to the move, and challenged viewers to really put themselves in his shoes before shaking their heads at him.

“I love doing my job, I really do and it's like anybody, if anyone can put their hand on their heart and say you would actually leave your job if someone was going to pay you a little bit more money to move on and do the same job in the same tent and I had to stay.”

He finished by saying he hasn’t “got long left” (don’t worry, he doesn’t mean what you think he means) and insisted that he had to make the best decision for him and his family.

“I've got a family and I'm just coming to the end of my career I suppose,” he said. “I'm 50 odd, I haven't got long left. I'm not going to last like Mary, 81. I'll never last until I'm 81 but while it's here, I will carry on doing my job as a judge on The Great British Bake Off.”

Fair enough, we suppose; not many people can say they have Mary’s stamina.

Fingers crossed someone signs up to keep Hollywood company; that Bake Off tent can get awful lonesome when you’re the only one sat there…
