#BeingFemaleInNigeria; women reveal stories of discrimination in new Twitter campaign

rexfeatures_1734036q.jpg

Nigerian women are boldly opening up about sexist attitudes towards relationships, marriage, work, independence and abuse under the hashtag #BeingFemaleInNigeria.

The new hashtag - which is reminiscent of Laura Bates's #everydaysexism movement in the UK - has been trending on Twitter in Nigeria and become a platform for discussing discrimination and double standards in the country.

It all began when a Nigerian book group of approximately 10 women and five men started conversing about their book of the month - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s (pictured above) We Should All Be Feminists, based on the writer's popular Ted talk of the same name.

The discussion quickly evolved into storytelling session about how women are discriminated against, Florence Warmate, a member of the group told Buzzfeed.

“We all started discussing our experiences, and then we thought, ‘This should go to a wider group’. If no one talks about it, it just escalates, and it becomes a normal thing that happens to everyone. So we wanted to spread this fire.”

That's exactly has happened. When Warmate started tweeting her thoughts using the hashtag #BeingFemaleinNigeria, her timeline was soon flooded with other women sharing their gender-biased experiences.

Women across the world are joining in on the conversation and the hashtag has been mentioned more than 80,000 times on Twitter.

Some of the accounts are brilliantly bold and deeply depressing. Take a look at the most telling tweets below.
