This champagne is one of the best in the world – and it costs just £16.99

If someone asked us to pick up a bottle of high-quality champagne (and promised to reimburse us, obviously), we’d probably search high and low for an award-winning Dom Pérignon, Veuve Clicquot or Cristal.

But it just so happens that we needn’t look much further than our local Co-Op.

That’s right: a £16.99 bottle of Co-Op’s own-brand bubbles, Les Pionniers NV Brut, was awarded Gold in the Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships 2017.

One of just 16 champagnes from around the world to be bestowed with the award, the luxe drink is made in France from Chardonnay grapes – making for a deliciously crisp, dry flavour.

And, considering it’s been ranked alongside the likes of a Louis Roederer Cristal Brut Rosé 2004 (which retails at £396) and a Dom Pérignon 1998 P2 Magnum (retailing at £310), this is definitely a boozy name worth dropping.

Ben Cahill, champagne buyer at Co-Op, told The Telegraph: “It's fantastic to see Co-op's own brand champagne rubbing shoulders with some of the most esteemed brands in the industry.

“We travel the globe to source top-quality wine at the very best prices and this win just goes to show that buying award-winning wine doesn't have to break the bank.”

So booze snobs take note: supermarkets are knocking it out of the park booze-wise at the moment. With a £5.99 rosé wine and a £9.97 gin, both from Aldi, topping expert taste tests and being named among the best in the world recently, consider us sold.

If you need us, we’ll be raiding the fridges at our local branch…
