Ebay for breakups: website helps the heartbroken sell unwanted baggage that reminds them of their ex

When moving on from a painful break up, cleansing your environment of everything that reminds you of your ex is a necessary, albeit painful, process.

Well a new site has come up with an all-round solution for shedding your emotional baggage by allowing users to sell everything their old lover gave them, or items around the house that painfully remind them of days no-more. (Ideal if that necklace they gifted you for Valentine’s last year is just too valuable to toss in the trash.)

Never Liked It Anyway is fast becoming the home of the heartbroken.

Call it the eBay for the love sick, the website lets you make a buck on your heartbreak – and is a lot safer than trying to burn it all.

The idea came to Marketing consultant Bella Acton from her own personal experience when a split left her with two (expensive) plane tickets.

“If you look at it, there’s $2 billion in the dating space and zero dollars in the break-up space,” she told Quartz.

Categories on the site include ‘Jewelry’, ‘Bridal’ and ‘Accessories’ – items that are typical romantic gifts or costly wedding day items, such as wedding dresses.

If your partner took a more alternative approach to gift giving, users can upload items into ‘Weird Stuff’ or ‘Everything Else’ categories, too. A green bike currently sits in the latter section.

Currently, the highest price of an item sold on the site goes to a diamond ring that went for $18,500 (£12,235). So users could earn themselves a pretty penny or two.

But the founder of the site stresses that it isn’t all about money making off people's emotional misfortune.  Bella said:

“We started Never Liked It Anyway to make moving on easier. It’s a place to shed the stories and the stuff.”

With every item that is uploaded, space is given to allow the user to express why they feel to need to part with the piece, and what they plan to do with the cash to help them ‘bounce back.’

Moreover, people are also welcome and encouraged to submit their own stories about heartbreak and moving forward with their lives, and to read the experiences of others who may be going through similar situations. The top three headlines on the site at present read ‘Cheating Husband’, ‘Pathological Liar’ and ‘Traded in for a Younger Model’.

Never Liked It Anyway also offers editorial content in its blog section, advising people on working through break-ups and moving forward, making it an all-rounder for the newly-single, rather than just a commerce site. Make some extra cash and find a community of people going through the same thing as you? We’re sold.
