Breast cancer survivor gets married seconds before running London Marathon

A breast cancer survivor who got married moments before running the London Marathon has spoken out about her “epic” day and how she hopes her journey will inspire others.

Jackie Scully, 35, tied the knot with her husband Duncan Sloan at the Cutty Sark at 7.30am yesterday morning, before the pair went on to run the 26.2 mile marathon.

Brilliantly, Jackie even ran the race wearing a specially-created bridal gown, complete with traditional veil.

The couple, who are the first ever to get married on the morning of the marathon and complete the whole event, got engaged just three weeks before Jackie was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer.

They decided to run the marathon after tying the knot in order to “gift back” their wedding to the charities who supported them through the ordeal, and offer hope to others going through the same thing.

“Wedding planning turned to surgery planning and the whole experience could have ripped us apart had it not been for the incredible Willow Foundation and Breast Cancer Care,” Jackie told Stylist.co.uk.

“They gave me back my smile and reminded me that I was more than a cancer patient. I could be the person Duncan fell in love with. So, we decided to gift our wedding (and honeymoon trekking the Great Wall of China) back to those charities so that other people can find the strength to face another day.”

Describing the experience of running the event in her wedding dress as “amazing”, Jackie said, “People had heard the story, so it was six hours of runners and spectators congratulating us.

“I would highly recommend running the London Marathon in fancy dress – just maybe not the planning a wedding at the same time bit.”

Jackie finished the race in five hours and 56 minutes, an incredible feat at the best of times but even more so considering that she trained while undergoing therapy, had her hip completely rebuilt 10 years ago and had also been battling injury for the last 10 months.

“Even the first step hurt so it took everything just to keep moving forward,” she said.

The couple have raised almost £20,000 after completing the run, and are now planning to trek the Great Wall of China on their honeymoon in order to raise even more.

Explaining that she wanted to “offer people hope”, Jackie said, “I have been at the bottom of the stairs I couldn't walk up. Yesterday, I stood on a start line and I didn't know if I would make the finish.

“But, you really can go a long way with the right people by your side and when you have a big enough how, you can endure any why!”
