This is why we won't be getting a Bridesmaids sequel

Reboots, prequels and sequels may be serious box office fodder at the moment, but the director of the now cult comedy film Bridesmaids has explained that there’s a very good reason he won’t be jumping on bandwagon.

Speaking about the female-centric comedy with Saturday Night Live's Michael Che, Paul Feig explained that, while it’s ultimately the choice of the movie’s star and writer Kristen Wiig whether a follow-up gets made, he thinks the self-contained nature of Annie’s story means it’s best left alone.

“People always say they want a sequel to Bridesmaids,” he said, £but the whole reason that movie worked was [Kristen Wiig’s character] is a mess and she learned how to repair her life.

“You can’t do a sequel and she’s a mess and has to repair her life again.”

Feig added: “People tend to think the artifice around all that is what made the movie great, but it was really that emotional journey and so, you almost kind of have to be careful of it.”

While we’d happily watch Bridesmaids again and again, we’re tempted to agree with Feig – maybe it would be risky to try and recreate that perfect comic timing and the relatable dynamic between the bride, her best friend and maid of honour.

Then again, we really want to know what Annie and the gang are up to nowadays.
