Would you eat chocolate cheese?

We’re big fans of all the ‘ch’ foods, if we’re honest; from chips to chimichangas, almost every single edible item under this phonic sound barrier is absolutely delicious.

Chocolate and cheese, however, continue to reign supreme as the absolute best of the ‘ch’ bunch – and we’d be hard-pressed to choose between the two of them if we were asked to name our favourite.

Step up to the plate, then, Curds & Whey, who have just started selling one of the world’s first chocolate cheeses.

Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like.

To paraphrase Beyonce, this could be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare… but it’s apparently not as horrific on the tastebuds as we first imagined..

The Italian blue cheese – called Choco 21 – is ripened in a chocolate liqueur as it matures, before being rubbed with cocoa and decorated with chocolate chips. And, while it sounds like the Frankenstein’s monster of the dairy world, foodies are obsessed with its sweet ‘n’ salty flavour punch.

Speaking to Mashable, Anna Burley – who owns the Melbourne-based cheesemonger – explained that their entire stock has already sold out, with customers baying for more.

“The customer reaction to the product had been very positive before the post went viral, we had been expecting it to be popular but were surprised at just how much of a conversation starter it has proved to be,” revealed Burley.

When asked to describe the flavour, she said: “The blue itself is quite mild, and the liqueur adds the chocolate flavour without being sweet.”

We have so many questions about this; should we spread it on biscuits, or crackers? Are we supposed to pair it with pickles, or jams? Is it for dinner, or dessert? And wouldn’t it be better for everyone if we swapped out the chocolate for a healthy dollop of Marmite?

One thing’s for sure, it’ll definitely pair well with a red wine; both chocolate and cheese have been hailed for centuries as the ideal partner to marry our favourite bottle of plonk with, and now nobody needs to miss out. In fact, thanks to Choco 21, they can enjoy a decadent threesome without anyone raising so much as an eyebrow.

According to Instagram, the shop will have a restock of Choco 21 in a few weeks – suggesting that this is a fad which isn’t going to go away anytime soon. However, as they’re based all the way in Australia, this isn’t all that useful to Brits keen to try the stuff for themselves.

Thank goodness, then, for our European passports (there’s still time before Brexit, you guys); we can nip over to Italy, pick up a batch of the stuff, and ship it home in time for Christmas.

Or, you know, we could just wait for artisan cheese shops to jump on board the bandwagon and start dishing out the brown stuff themselves; now that Choco 21 is all over our social media feeds, it’s only a matter of time now…
