This condom has gone viral online - and people aren't happy

A condom is having its five seconds of fame after going viral thanks to the (very) misleading message emblazoned on its wrapper.

The condoms, which were recently handed out to students on a university campus in the US, have “go further without consent” written in bold writing on their wrappers, accompanied by a seemingly random cartoon of a donut.

An image of one of the condoms first surfaced online two days ago, when a student posted it to Reddit alongside the caption, “Safe sex campaign on my campus handed these out”.

And after taking a first look at the condoms, people weren’t happy, with some 1,249 comments rolling in within 48 hours.

Some wrote comments showing their fury at the apparent messaging: “The text ‘go further without consent’ should have been an instant NOPE.”

Others were confused about the choice of pastry: “Why is there a goddamn doughnut on a condom?”

And, finally, there were the people left enraged by the whole aesthetic: “Holy f**k that's a bad design.”

In case you hadn’t guessed (it took us a while), the doughnut is supposed to represent the words ‘do not’, meaning the whole message of the condom becomes, “do not go further without consent”.

But even once they’d worked this out, the Reddit audience were still in shock that someone thought the condoms were a good idea.

As one particularly succint user put it: “Holy s**t, the doughnut is supposed to mean ‘do not’? That's f***ing stupid as f***.”

The condom design

The condoms are made by a custom design company, Say It With A Condom, and although they are currently sold out, they usually retail at $3.99 (£3.02) for one, or $0.47 (36p) each when you buy over 10,000 (should you ever need to bulk buy condoms in their thousands).

Astonishingly, groups such as Planned Parenthood and Think Progress have contributed testimonials about the positive message the condom represents, The Independent reports.

But while the doughnut condom is easy to misinterpret, the brand does have a whole host of other, much clearer, condoms for sale online:

But whatever the design of the condom, at least they’ve got the messaging right: both parties must always consent to sex.
