Why this depression sufferer’s bedroom is going viral

If you suffer from depression, or know someone who does, you’ll know that the illness can render the sufferer incapable of even getting out of bed – let alone doing the tidying up.

Perhaps that’s why one depression sufferer’s bedroom makeover has been making waves online.

Igmur user, ‘toofuckingbusyandviceversa’, posted the before and after pictures on Monday, and they have already been viewed over 300,000 times.

The post, entitled Me 1 - Depression 0! Perfectly illustrates how the condition affects the user (whose name and location are unknown) on a daily basis.

The first image is a snap of the user’s bedroom pre clear-up. An enormous pile of discarded plastic drink bottles scatter the carpet by the bed which, itself, is strewn with a heap of clothes, the contents of a bag, books and a teddy bear. At the foot of the bed, the carpet is barely visible beneath piles of scattered notepaper. The blinds are closed and the room is dark.

The caption below the photograph reads:

“I suffer from severe depression and have a really hard time with cleaning and doing other kinds of household work. My room have been this messy for several months because I cant push myself to take care of it.”

The post ends with the uplifting: “But this Friday I decided to finally do it!”

Below which, a second image is posted, with the title ‘Three days later…’ This time, the same room taken from the same angle – but it looks like a different place altogether. The floor is completely clear and clean, the bed is made and neat, and the teddy bear is sitting propped up on the pillows.

The image reveals what the bedroom looks like after three days of cleaning, and the caption reads:

“You can finally see that I have a floor! Say hi to my teddy Nalle on the bed! I know its not a big victory, but for me it means the world to just be able to have my door open if people come over. I feel so at peace right now, just wanted to share with all of you wonderful imgurians! Me 1 - Depression 0!”

Below the post, comments of support have been flooding in, with users in similar positions understanding, and saying how the images exemplify one of the results of depression.

BenjaminT247 says: “Good job @OP , 1 step at a time, 1 small victory after another, is what will get you through this (: i wish you the best”

DimensionalRift added: “As a person who suffers from major depression, this makes me happy :) dont let it win!”

ResistingNut says: “Good job OP. I too suffer from major depressive disorder and some of the most simple task can be the most difficult to do. Keep it up!”
