Disney is planning a Mary Poppins film remake

Disney has been quietly working on a remake of classic children’s film Mary Poppins, and after today's reactions to the news, we don’t blame them for keeping it under their hats.

Regardless of birth date, the film remains treasured by all. Who doesn't hum A Spoon Full of Sugar when confronted with cough syrup? Don't wind days still make you want to go fly a kite... up to the highest height?

One of the best loved characters from childhood, a Mary Poppins remake is certainly a dicey decision for Disney. Can a follow-up ever match the award-winning original (21 trophies in total) which bagged Julie Andrews a Best Actress Oscar?

In what's likely to turn out to be a clever move, the new film won’t be an exact remake.

Set in Depression-era London some 20 years after the original, the live-action musical will take from the rest of P.L. Travers’ Mary Poppins book series.

Not exactly a sequel either, it’s thought the script will look at the adventures of Mary Poppins beyond the first book – there are eight in total – which made up the best part of the 1964 adaptation.

Into The Woods and Chicago director Rob Marshall is said to be leading the project, alongside respected musical producers John DeLuca and Marc Platt.

And while casting for the lead roles is yet to take place, Twitter is currently abuzz with pleas to rule out Danny Dyer immediately as a replacement for Dick Van Dyke’s Bert, while others have floated Anna Kendrick as a potential Poppins.

Then we come to the crucial matter of the songs.

There’s been no word on whether the new film will use songs from the original score such as Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and Chim Chim Cher-ee, though Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the songwriting team behind Hairspray, are thought to be on board.

Despite a series of Disney remakes currently propping up Hollywood – Maleficent, Cinderella, Alice In Wonderland, Beauty and the Beast is currently underway starring Emma Watson – news of the planned Mary Poppins project has come as a surprise to many.

And understandably, some have not greeted the idea in the most delightful way…
