Now this Disney princess is getting her own gritty live-action movie

There’s no point denying it; 2016 has been, without a doubt, the year of the Disney live-action movie.

Over the past few months, we’ve treated to teasers for Emma Watson’s upcoming stint as Belle in the new Beauty and the Beast, and been informed that the Mickey Mouse brand is rebooting The Lion King, Aladdin, The Jungle Book, and Mulan.

Now it’s time for another Disney princess to have her moment: step up to the plate, Snow White.

That’s right; the fairest girl in all the land is getting an official Disney remake, just like Cinderella before her.

Although it sounds as if things are going to be far grittier than the 1937 animated musical.

While no actors or directors have been linked to the project yet, the studio is reportedly in talks with The Girl On The Train's Erin Cressida Wilson to write the script.

Marc Platt, who is also on board to work on Disney's upcoming sequel Mary Poppins Returns (starring Emily Blunt), will produce, while La La Land's songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul will write new songs for Snow White’s latest outing.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarves was Disney's first animated feature film and a massive success for the studio. It won an honorary Oscar at the 11th Academy Awards and is considered one of, if not the most, successful animated films of all time.

The film – despite being rife with cheery little tunes, including Someday My Prince Will Come and Heigh Ho – had a darker edge to it, with the Wicked Queen terrifying many young viewers back in the day.

However there’s no denying that the Brothers Grimm fairytale on which it was based on was far darker, with far more attempts on the young princess’ life.

She was laced up so tightly she asphyxiated, was poisoned with a deadly comb and choked to a state of near-death on an enchanted apple.

The prince, meanwhile, had never met Snow before he came across her corpse – and, rather than kissing her, decided to take her glass coffin off to display in his castle. Yup, he was that enamoured with her beauty.

During the manhandling of her final resting place, the apple was dislodged from Snow’s throat, she was immediately revived, and the pair decided to get married…

As you do.

And the Wicked Queen? Well, she gets her comeuppance, naturally. After learning that Snow is alive and married to a prince, she is so consumed with rage that she literally chokes to death.

Lovely.

As of yet, it remains to be seen whether Disney will explore the darker aspects of the German fairytale in the new reboot. However, with so many live-action versions of Snow White embedded in Hollywood lore, there’s no denying that they will have to do something to set theirs apart from the others.

Kristen Stewart, Lily Collins, and Ginnifer Goodwin have all brought Snow White to life in recent adaptations, including 2012's Mirror Mirror, Snow White and the Huntsman, and popular television show Once Upon A Time.

We wonder who Disney have in mind to play the raven-haired princess this time around?
