While we might be fans of Ariel, Belle, Jasmine and co, an artist has imagined what some more alternative Disney Princesses might look like.

Drawing from history, Greek mythology and folklore as inspiration, designer Jason Porath has created a series of posters titled Rejected Disney Princesses, who are "too awesome, awful, or off beat for the movies".

Posted up on a tumblr, aptly named rejectedprincesses.com, the artist updates followers with a new image and story every Wednesday.

Included in his list is Lolita, the first ever female tanker to win the Hero of the Soviet Union awards, Sergeant Mariya Oktyabrskaya, and a 6th-century Merovingian queen consort who had a penchant for strangling people.

While many of the stories are quite gruesome in parts (most of them involve the women killing some or putting a horrible curse on them), Porath does give a fascinating insight into stories that have been passed down through the ages, and also champions some incredibly badass women.

You can read all the stories on each princess by clicking on each image.
