Donald Trump launches “real news” programme hosted by daughter-in-law

Dissatisfied with the mainstream media, Donald Trump has decided to treat us to his version of the news, by creating a bulletin of all his recent achievements as president. Lucky us.

A two-minute “real news” video, hosted by the US president’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump, now appears on the official Donald Trump Facebook page.

Lara, who is married to President Trump’s son Eric, opens the video with the announcement: “I bet you haven't heard about all the accomplishments the president had this week because there's so much fake news out there.”

She continues to highlight a number of what she calls “achievements”, including the donation of President Trump’s salary to government departments, a rise in jobs for Americans and a meeting with military veterans.

“Let's talk about the president's salary - again the president has donated his salary,” says Lara. “His first quarter salary has gone to the parks department, his second quarter salary has now been donated to the department of education. This is a president putting America before himself. I am so proud of that."

Lara continues: “Next up - jobs, jobs, jobs.”

“The unemployment rate is at the lowest it has been since 2001 - that is quite an incredible fact. It’s been 16 years since the unemployment rate has been this low.”

She also reports that the “stock market is up” and the “economy is booming ladies and gentlemen”.

Choosing not to comment on President Trump’s proposed ban on transgender military service, Lara instead focuses on the business tycoon’s “special” meeting with veterans in Ohio.

Speaking to the camera, she says, “every day in this country we like to honour our American heroes,” she says. “These are men and women who put their lives on the line to make sure that we are safe. The president went out of his way this week to give a special honour to some very special people.”

“The medal of valour was given to at the White House to the men and women who heroically saved lives during the congressional baseball shooting”.

Lara continues, “the president also met with some incredible veterans this week in Ohio, giving his thanks to them for their service in this country.”

Signing off, Lara states: "Thanks for joining us, and that was the real news."

Writing on Twitter, President Trump appeared to defend his ‘real news’ video as the result of his unfair treatment at the hands of the press.

However, many Twitter users have expressed concern that the video has echoes of state propaganda, with some drawing comparisons to repressive and undemocratic regimes.

“Donald Trump creating his ‘real’ news channel, where he ignores all the negative press and just focuses on good news, is dangerous,” wrote one user.

“This will be equivalent to state run news… similar to communist/dictatorship regimes,” agreed Deborah McCabe.

Another Twitter user compared Lara Trump’s appearance in the ‘real news’ video to a speech delivered by  Ri Chun-hee, a North Korean news anchor who has been previously dubbed "North Korea's propaganda queen".
