Enjoy a Burns Night party with a twist

It’s not only Scots and poetry lovers who can enjoy Burns Night, which celebrates the birth of Scottish poet Robert Burns, on 25 January. Hannah Bardell, SNP MP for Livingston, shares her perfect celebration

What to drink

“Whisky: neat. A big Burns Night tradition is to toast the haggis with a glass of the strong stuff.” Try artisanal 808 whisky (31dover.com) with coconut water or visit Shoreditch’s Discount Suit Company (discountsuitcompany.co.uk) for a Burns Supper cocktail.

What to eat

“Burns Night is incomplete without a haggis. Buy from Macsween (macsween.co.uk) and serve with mashed neeps and tatties – turnips and potatoes.” In Glasgow? Visit Stravaigin (stravaigin.co.uk) for a three-course meal, live bagpipes and poetry. In Liverpool enjoy a mass ceilidh at St George’s Hall (liverpoolcityhalls.co.uk).

What to listen to

“Reading Burns’ poems such as My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose and singing is essential.” Spotify’s Scottish Greats playlist (spoti.fi/burns) with Franz Ferdinand and Paolo Nutini is perfect.

What to wear

“Anything – just make sure it’s tartan. I like to shop at Totty Rocks, Edinburgh (tottyrocks.co.uk), for vintage-inspired tartan.” Splash out on Scottish designer Christopher Kane (matchesfashion.com) or a contemporary kilt by Le Kilt (harveynichols.com).

My 2016 pledge to women

Burns night

“I will work to address the issues of gender inequality and diversity in the House of Commons, the outdated voting system and closing the gender pay gap. I will also drive initiatives that promote business including gender equality and diversity.”
