Sports presenter and Olympics tour de force Clare Balding has joined Stylist magazine as a monthly columnist backing our Fair Game campaign for equality in sport.
Clare launches Stylist's first ever sports column, titled The Clare Balding Report, tomorrow (11 December).
The TV presenter's knowledge and passion won her fans around the world in her coverage of London 2012 and she’s also a true advocate of equality, making her a perfect match for Stylist’s Fair Game initiative to help end sexism in sport.
Her first column for Stylist tackles the issue head-on:
"I had a run-in with the Today programme on Radio 4 the other day," she writes. "The sports reporter referred to the lack of women on last year’s Sports Personality Of The Year (SPOTY) shortlist as a 'hoo-ha'. This made me a little tetchy. "Please don’t trivialise it," I snapped. "It was not a hoo-ha. It was a matter for genuine debate and entirely reflective of the lack of media coverage of women’s sport.""
Clare said it was "an honour" to join the Stylist team as a columnist, covering everything from the sporting events you need to watch to the female athletes she champions and the sexist sports commentator who gets on her nerves.
"I'm very pleased and proud, if a little amazed," she said. "I can't quite believe 2012 has been so wonderful and has given me so many different highlights. I always say that life's an adventure but this has been the most exciting and extraordinary adventure of all. I'm looking forward to writing regularly for Stylist and hope your readers will be inspired to support or take up sport in the months to come."
