Family Dog Keeps Missing Boy Safe

They say dogs are a man’s best friend…

When a three-year-old boy went missing from home, it was his beloved furry friend that came to his rescue.

Carson Urness was playing with his three-year-old dog Cooper on Monday evening at the family’s farmyard in Cooperstown, North Dakota, when the pair wandered just a bit too far.

Carson’s mother raised the alarm at around 7:30pm when her son and family dog were nowhere to be found on the property.

Search and rescue teams were called in, and along with the Urness’ neighbours and volunteers from the surrounding area, more than 200 people joined in on the search.

Together they combed over three square miles for the missing boy, but without any luck. As the search continued well past midnight, and threat to the boy’s safety was imminent, search dogs and a patrol plane were also deployed.

Just around 2am in the morning, when the search was about to be called off due to severe rain and cold weather, a volunteer finally spotted Cooper the dog in the distance.

That’s when the team found Cooper with Carson, a mile away from the family home.

"Pat (one volunteer) went over the hill and shot his headlights and Cooper stood up just enough to let him know he was there," Carson’s mum Courtney told Valleynewslive.com.

The boy’s clothes were torn and tattered, shoes muddy and scuffed. Miraculously, however, he was unscathed from the whole ordeal thanks to his loyal pet.

Cooper not only kept by the boy’s side the entire time, but also kept Carson warm and dry by huddling over him.

The family doctor only found the boy's feet to be wet and cold.

Carson's parents believe he must have wandered off after searching for things to play with whilst outside with the dog.
