The first ever trailer for the upcoming film adaptation of hit children's dystopian novel The Giver, which stars Oscar-winning Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges, has been released.

The Giver is based on Lois Lowry's novel of the same name which centers on a teenage boy named Jonas (played by Australian newcomer Brenton Thwaites) who lives in a seemingly ideal world of conformity and contentment. However, when he is given his life assignment as the 'Receiver of Memory' he discovers there are dark complex secrets behind his fragile community.

The film trailer opens with Streep's haunting voice as Chief Elder, the leader of Jonas' community. She says, "From great suffering, great pain, came a solution – communities. Where disorder became harmony". It's followed by scenes of a utopian society where everything seems perfect and free from war, pain and suffering. The trailer then reveals Streep's on-screen look as the stern, grey-haired villain.

Jeff Bridges goes head-to-head against Streep's character as 'The Giver', who counsels Jonas.

"The way things are and the way things look, are very different," warns Bridges' character in the trailer. “I cannot prepare you for what’s going to happen.”

The film also stars Katie Holmes, True Blood actor Alexander Skarsgard and Taylor Swift who plays The Giver's daughter Rosemary. Swift is expected to have a large part in the film, although she only features in the trailer for a split second.

Following the release of the trailer, the star tweeted: 'So excited to have been a part of this. First look at The Giver.'

She has swapped her blonde locks for brunette hair for the role.

Fans of the novel – which has sold over 10 million copies worldwide and won the Newbury Medal in 1994 – are eagerly anticipating the release of the film, where author Lowry has served as a co-screenwriter.
