From the deskside Lotus to a park bench Boat Pose: meet the new wave yogis shunning the mat

If you’re tired of yoga inspo being limited to bronzed models doing Downward Dog in a deserted paradise, Yoga Suitra is the new Instagram account for you.

On a mission to bring yoga back to the ‘real life’, Australian yoga instructor Jordan Berger has set up the account - forgive him for the sun-drenched snaps, he is based in Sydney - to capture regular yogis doing their thing in the most everyday places.

An Extended Angle Side Bend while reaching for the sweet peppers in the supermarket? Yep, Berger’s snapped one volunteer doing just that.

Full Boat Pose on a bench outside your favourite lunch spot? Also featured, and it doesn’t look half as socially awkward as you might expect.

Talking to Mashable about his campaign to move yoga off the mat and into daily life, Berger says: “I'll be at the bar, in a grocery store, and I will see the opportunity and take it. It is kind of addictive. You start to realise that yoga is everywhere.

“There are plenty [of Instagram stars] that are amazing, but I am trying to give a much more grounded view. I think a lot of people see these people and think they can’t do that - and forget about all the other components of what yoga is about.

“The goal is to raise awareness about mindset, rather than yoga as just the crazy physical postures. It is not about the physical, it is about the mental and spiritual guidance.”

From an at-desk Lotus to an airport Heron Pose, here’s Berger and his new wave of yogis proving that you really you don’t need a mat (or breathtaking sunset) to practice yoga.
