The clever Donald Trump reference you missed in Game of Thrones

We’re about to talk about the seventh season of Game of Thrones. With that in mind, please be aware that this article is dark and full of spoilers.

Ah, Game of Thrones: the seventh season may be over, but the conversations about it will never cease. There are just too many fan theories, hidden references, easter eggs, badass feminist moments, and incredibly progressive sex scenes to talk about, quite honestly.

The one thing (or person) we didn’t think we’d be discussing in context with the HBO show, though, is Donald Trump. However, it has now been revealed that the controversial POTUS had a pretty big impact on one of the show’s most important scenes to date.

We’re talking, of course, about that moment where Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) honourably discloses his true allegiance to Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) – despite the fact that it ruins any hope of reaching a peace treaty with rival queen Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey).

Here’s a brief reminder for you:

“When enough people make false promises, words stop meaning anything,” declares Jon. “Then there are no more answers, only better and better lies.

“And lies won’t help us in this fight.”

It’s a powerful tribute to integrity – and one which was, funnily enough, filmed on the very same day that Trump was elected the President of the United States.

Speaking to Variety about the scene, Liam Cunningham – who plays Ser Davos – explained: “That speech that Jon Snow gave about the nature of lies and what's been said, and what happens if we don't stick to our word.

“We filmed that on exactly the day that a certain POTUS was elected and it had incredible resonance while we were filming it.”

The actor continued to explain that the writers had taken inspiration from Trump’s controversial presidential campaign, and attempted to send a message to the people of the world through their most honourable character since Ned Stark.

However, while the actors had rehearsed the scenes many times over, they filmed the final version shortly after the results of the 2016 election had been announced. The atmosphere on set had changed, and the only topic of conversation between the stars – just like every “person on the planet” – was what a Trump administration would mean for America and the world.

“The results had just been announced the morning we filmed that particular scene – that particular day of that scene with Mr. Kit Harington,” said Cunningham.

“We may have been rehearsing that scene. But that was the first time that Kit had said those words on that platform in that scene. So it had a certain resonance, I'm sure you'll understand.”

Most presidential candidates are careful not to promise too much on the campaign trail, for fear of not being able to fulfil their vows come their inauguration.

That wasn’t the case for Trump, though, who listed off a whopping 76 things he would do if elected. Think building “the greatest wall that you’ve ever seen” along the southern border, forcing Mexico to pay for that wall, getting rid of Obamacare and replacing it with something “terrific”, never taking a vacation, picking Supreme Court justices who are “really great legal scholars”, and, laughably, “taking care of women”.

One thing that he does seem to have stuck to so far, though, is his promise to be as “unpredictable” as possible.

You can find a full list of Trump’s promises here.
