Get to know band of the moment Savages

Savages-band-music.jpg

Everything you need to know about the band who will be your next Spotify obsession

The black-clad rock group consists of lead singer Jehnny Beth (who is French and lives in Paris) and three Brits – Ayse Hassan on bass, drummer Fay Milton and guitarist Gemma Thompson. Beth, Hassan and Thompson met while playing in separate bands around London before joining forces and recruiting Milton to complete the line-up in 2011. Silence Yourself, their dark and angry debut, was released in 2013 and the band became renowned for their immersive, intensive live shows.

Adore Life, their second album – out this week – is a riotous, post-punk cure for the January blues (or greys – or even darker shades). Don’t be misled by the title of this ‘difficult second album’; it is a throbbing, tough and thrilling collection of songs about love, with no Adele-like ballads in sight.

They’re a rock band – no female prefix required. The band were at the heart of a social media commotion in early 2015 after The New York Times referred to them as an “all-female rock band” in a headline. Who can blame them? After all, no-one describes The Rolling Stones or Arctic Monkeys or Royal Blood as “all-male”…

Adore Life by Savages is released on Friday 22 January, itunes.apple.com
