End of an era: watch the trailer for the very last season of Girls

We are definitely happy that the trailer for the sixth series of Girls is here – it means more Girls is on its way shortly and that’s a wonderful thing.

But, you know, yin and yang, light and dark – every silver lining has its cloud. And thus, we also know that the 40-second sneak peek (which you can watch below), exciting as it is, also heralds the end of one of the best TV shows of recent years.

Creator and star Lena Dunham has said the 10-episode run, set to air in February next year, is the show’s last, and as the trailer explains, this is “their last chance to get it almost right”. Sob.

All the biggest characters are featured in the clip, starting with Hannah (Dunham) getting picked up in a convertible by a typically chic Marnie (Allison Williams) and her estranged husband Desi (Ebon Moss-Bachrach).

Adam (Adam Driver) and Jessa (Jemima Kirke) appear to still be together (and are extremely excited about something) while Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet), Ray (Alex Karpovsky) and Elijah (Andrew Rannells) all make appearances too.

There’s no reference in the trailer to any of the rumoured storylines doing the rounds, including Hannah being pregnant or getting back with Adam, which were prompted by set pictures appearing to show Dunham’s character getting cosy with Adam and touching her stomach.

Having focused on the friends navigating their 20s, Dunham, who turned 30 this year, has said it felt like a natural time to end their stories: “It just felt as though, if we were to continue on, it wouldn't be about what it was originally about. It would be the equivalent of moving them to California, only California is them getting married and having kids and stuff like that.

“It just feels like at this point, it makes sense for us to wrap their stories up."

And the trailer appears to show Hannah mulling whether she’s done enough (and possibly hinting that she’s leaving New York), as she says to Elijah: “I haven’t made my mark on this city yet.”

While it may whet your appetite for the February airing, those hoping for clues as to how the series will end will be left disappointed.

However, according to HBO's Kathleen McCaffrey, who's worked closely with the show's team, they “found a beautiful way to close the story that feels both satisfying and I think leaves it open for the possibility for all of us to wonder what happens to each of them.

“I think it's really well done, well-constructed and beautifully told.”

We can’t wait. Except we can because we don’t want it to end. But we also can’t. Damn you, Dunham.
