Lena Dunham nails friendship in new Girls series 6 trailer

We’ve had two sneak peeks of the sixth series of Girls, but now a full trailer has been released for what will be the final outing of Lena Dunham’s HBO show.

And judging by the clip, which you can watch below, there’ll be more of the particular brand of millennial wit and wisdom we’ve come to know and love, with such pertinent one-liners as: “Why can’t someone just tell me exactly what to do in a way that makes it seem like it’s my idea?”

While previous promos have shown us tense relations between the girls, this is framed around Hannah (Dunham) explaining over breakfast why she’s a “really perfect fit” for a magazine commission (and encapsulating most of the internet in one sentence): “I don’t give a shit about anything yet I simultaneously have opinions about everything.”

We then dip into the goings-on of the other three, with a glimpse into the fraught love life of Marnie (Allison Williams), who is carrying on a fling with Ray (Alex Karpovsky), who believes they’re in a proper relationship, while continuing to see husband Desi (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), with whom she’s considering, er, branching out with.

The relationship between Hannah’s ex Adam (Adam Driver) and (former?) friend Jessa (Jemima Kirke) is still causing drama, while Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) appears to consider herself a full-blown adult, declaring, “All of those ladies out there who, like, have jobs and purses and nice personalities? Those are now my friends.”

Marnie and Ray seem to have a complicated relationship

Dunham and Girls co-showrunner Jenni Konner have always been adept at capturing various facets of female friendship and this shows no sign of diminishing in the final series if the trailer’s brief conversation between Marnie and Hannah is anything to go by.

When a teary Marnie asks, “Do you promise that we’ll always be friends?”, Hannah responds: “Do you think I’m going to stop being your friend now? After putting up with all this bullshit?”

Excellent.

Series six is set to begin February 12 on HBO, and Dunham has confirmed that it will be the last ever, saying it “it makes sense for us to wrap their stories up” before the central characters turn 30.
