“I never wanted it to end like this” Tumblr uncovers the heartbreaking final messages ex-lovers send each other

Some of the most insightful and poignant sentiments about love are borne out of heartbreak and now a Tumblr is lifting the lid on the world of other people's break-ups.

The Last Message Received shows the final texts lovers exchange at the end of relationships and is leaving the voyeur in us transfixed.

Some are overly sentimental, such as the flourishing sign off from one ex that declares: “The most colourful sunset and highest snow capped mountains can't begin to compare to you.”

Others are depressingly perfunctory: “Yeah, good luck with uni and all that.”

The Last Message Received

“I promise. I will never let go, Jack. I'll never let go” - Rose's last words to Jack in 'Titanic'

There are the cliched “it's not you, it's me” types, while some bitterly resort to abuse.

As well as the awkward and moving sign-offs by lovers at the end of relationships, people are sharing the poignant and unintentionally moving messages they have received from loved ones before they passed away.

The account, which allows people to post anonymously, was set up by Emily Trunko, a 15-year-old girl from the US state of Ohio.

“I’ve always been fascinated with glimpses into the lives of other people,” she tells BuzzFeed. “I thought that the last message sent before a breakup or before someone passed away would be really poignant.”

Take a look at some of the standout messages, below.
