Hercules fans, we have incredibly exciting news for you…

Disney’s Hercules may have come out an unbelievable 20 years ago (feel old yet?) but it’s every bit as relevant to our lives now as it once was.

We’ve got the timeless tale of a misfit trying to find their place in the big old world. We’ve got feminist badass Megara (who ranks very highly in our definitive feminist ranking of Disney princesses, we’ll have you know) and, of course, we’ve got those ridiculously catchy tunes.

Haven’t we all crooned along to I Won’t Say I’m in Love at least once? Don’t we all bloody love Gospel Truth? And we defy you to show us one single person who doesn’t feel overjoyed and empowered when Zero to Hero unexpectedly blares out of the radio.

Exactly.

The soundtrack was created by Disney music mogul Alan Menken (the very same guy who scored The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Tangled, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and more) – and now he’s confirmed some very exciting news.

Yup, he’s hard at work on the stage adaptation of Hercules – so it’s time to get your titanic rears in gear and kick some Olympian butt.

Speaking to The Orange County Register, Menken said: “I have a very strong belief that, like Newsies [a movie critically panned but successfully brought to Broadway], Hercules is going to have a moment that will surprise people.

“[That’s why I’m] I’m working on a stage version of Hercules.”

Treading the boards is nothing new for Disney: from The Lion King, which opened in 1997, to the Tony-nominated Aladdin, we’ve seen plenty of our favourite films hit up Broadway and London’s West End over the last few years.

And Hercules, with its emphasis on gospel music, is guaranteed to go down an absolute treat with theatregoers everywhere.

While there’s no date in sight for the (now) hotly anticipated stage show, we’ve no doubt that it’s going to be a rip-roaring success – especially with Menken at the reigns – and there’s no reason not to hope it’ll land this side of the pond, too.

We wonder if he’ll be able to convince Danny DeVito to reprise his role as Phil…?
