‘Ladies’ parking’ hits China

Motorists in China may all pass the same driving test, but businesses in the country are increasingly installing “wider” parking spaces for women.

A car park in northern China has built an LP section - that's "Ladies' Parking" - for female drivers it believes will appreciate pink walls and gigantic parking bays.

Female drivers who have forgotten the skills that got them a license can head to car parks like the one above

Women who were presumably spending hours driving around the city of Tianjin in desperate search of a gigantic clearing can now breathe a sigh of relief and slip into first gear as they head for the underground LP.

Hopefully female drivers won't get too distracted by the pretty pictures adorning the LP area, above

Many underground parking garages in Tianjin have designed special parking places "for ladies, to provide convenience for them," Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

China's first female-only parking spaces created an outcry in 2009, when the Wanxiang-Tiancheng shopping centre made bays three feet wider than normal and its manager, Wang Zheng said women had a "strong sense of colour and different sense of distance" to men.

"There is a scientific basis for all this," he said at the time. "Women have a poorer sense of distance when they are locked inside a small space."
