London fried jam croissant named tastiest fast food on earth


If you need a new pick-me-up sweet snack, this could be your lucky day.

A Shoreditch cafe has been hailed for creating the world's tastiest pastry dish by the Chowzter fast feast awards 2014.

Albion bakery on Boundary Street was recognised for its signature (and wonderfully indulgent) jam fried croissants.

"This crescent-shaped pastry will take your breath away," intones a winner's film made by Chowzter. "Wave after wave of flavours hit you, from the flaky croissant and the fruity jam to the crunch of the crystallised sugar and the creamy taste of salted butter."

The Parisian treat is made by French Matthieu Cauty, who has been head baker at the award-winning Albion since it launched in 2009.

The Chowzter awards are now in their second year and involve food experts and bloggers around the world naming their favourite local fast food dishes. A tasting team then try out all the candidates (tough job) and whittle them down to a shortlist, divided by type of food and region.

The crowning winner overall this year - taking the title of tastiest dish in the world - is ceviche made at the legendary Chez Wong restaurant in Lima, Peru. Owner and head chef Javier Wong runs his restaurant from the front room of his house in a rougher neighborhood of the Peruvian capital and is considered a master of ceviche. There are no menus; you simply get what you're served and the restaurant books out months on advance.

L'As du Falaffel in Paris serves up the best vegetarian dish of all

As far as vegetarians are concerned, the legendary L'As du Falaffel in the Jewish quarter of Paris has been found to serve the world's tastiest veggie dish.

A favourite haunt of Lenny Kravitz, the restaurant has queues round the corner all year round and serves up a sumptuous falafel of deep fried chick peas seasoned with onions and spice, heaped in a warm pitta with grilled aubergine, red cabbage, hummus, tahini and hot sauce.

If pizza's your gig, Chowzter recognises Di Fara Pizza in Brooklyn as the world's tastiest. New Yorkers and tourists-in-the-know will happily stand in line for three hours to get a slice of Domenico DeMarco’s mouthwatering, award-winning pizzas at this iconic family restaurant.

All pizzas are carefully handcrafted using recipes passed down through generations and quality imported ingredients.

Vancouver's Dynasty Seafood scores a win for best seafood

Moving onto seafood, and executive chef Sam Leung is one of the best Chinese chefs in Vancouver - so it's perhaps no surprise that his Alaskan king crab five ways dish, served at Vancouver's Dynasty Seafood, was singled out by Chowzter as the world's finest seafood.

The stunning Canadian mountains surrounding the restaurant are a brilliant showcase for Leung's traditional-meets-West-Coast menu. During Alaskan king crab season (February - April), people across the city flock to experience his crab cuisine, with steamed garlic crab legs, deep fried crab knuckles and baked Alaskan king crab fried rice with Portuguese curry sauce.

If it's noodles you're after, look no further than Thip Samai in Bangkok

Other winners in the fast food awards include Thip Samai in Bangkok for best noodles - awarded for its pad thai. And Hainanese chicken rice at Tian Tian, Singapore, for best rice dish. The Caribbean roast sandwich at Cuban restaurant Paseo in Seattle was crowned the world's tastiest sandwich and the tastiest food in Europe award was given to a doner kebab dish at Karadeniz Pide Doner Salonu in Istanbul, Turkey.

London's fast food scene has burgeoned in recent years. Some of our favourite haunts include Mimmo La Bufala on South End Road in Hampstead, where you can get one of the most delicious margherita pizzas around. Banh Mi Bay in Holborn and Chancery Lane serves up moreish Vietnamese noodles and pancakes, and Bibendum restaurant off the King's Road rustles up fresh oysters amid traditional tiling and stained glass windows.
