London's most creative and challenging pub quizzes

Question: What's a better way to spend a chilly autumn evening than at a pub quiz? Answer: Very little. London's quirky and varied pubs have a lot to offer if you're in the market for gathering a group of friends and racking your brains for answers to obscure and varied questions.

From easy to challenging, themed questions to food tasting and dancing rounds, we've tracked down our favourite quizzes to test yours and your friends' general knowledge.

The foodie one

The Queen's Head, Hammersmith

Many pub quizzes have a dinner offer that go with the evening, but The Queen's Head in Hammersmith, West London, takes things one step further with a tasting round. Every week quizzers will try one of variety of cheeses, wines, pates (or much much more)

Where? Brook Green, Hammersmith

The film quiz

The Assembly House, Kentish Town

The Bigger Boat Film Quiz is infamous around London and takes place in several locations (try The Ritzy Cinema or the Hackney Picturehouse if you're not a North Londoner), but The Assembly House is its official residency. If you don't get what the quiz's name is referring to, it might be worth giving this one a miss, as it's a glorious geeky test of film trivia and references, with questions asked via a film projection.

Where? 292-294 Kentish Town Road, Kentish Town, NW5 2TG

When? The first Wednesday of every month, 8pm. £4 entry per person

The hands-on one

The Hollywood Arms, Chelsea

If you're looking for something a little more "gameshow" than "quiz", this is the place for you. With a bingo round and a "sensory" round, the atmosphere becomes a lot more lively, and you'll make a lot more friends than you would merely marking your neighbour's answers.

Where? 45 Hollywood Road, Chelsea, SW10 9HX

When? Every Tuesday, 8pm. £2 entry per person

The silly one

The Old Queens Head, Islington

This spacious pub doubles as a theatre, comedy gig venue, and has a lot of space for activity during its weekly pub quiz. Come ready to doodle, blow bubbles and play kazoos in the infamous Silly Round that accompanies the ordinary question and answer format.

Where? 44 Essex Road, Islington, N1 8LN

When? Every Tuesday, 7pm, £2 entry per person

The relaxed one

Steam Wine Bar, Monument

With free entry, this monthly pub quiz is a chilled out affair, so it's just as well it's set in a wine bar. The best pub quizzes allow you to enjoy yourself and have time to catch up with your friends at the same time, and this one allows you to do just that - livening up an after-work drink no end.

Where? One St. Georges Lane, EC3R 8DJ

When? The second Tuesday of each month, 6.30pm. Free entry

The difficult one

Sir Richard Steele, Chalk Farm

...but if you're an experienced quizzer and want to test yourself, the quiz at the Sir Richard Steele is for serious trivia fans. Smartphones are banned (as they should be), and things get competitive when the winning team can gamble all their points for a larger jackpot prize.

Where? 97 Haverstock Hill, London, NW3 4RL

When? Every Tuesday, 8.30pm. £1 entry per person

The music-themed one

The Lexington, Islington

Taking the phrase 'pop quiz' to its limits, this quiz, hosted by legendary record store Rough Trade, will sort the music wheat from the chaff with its picture rounds, anagrams and of course, name that tune rounds aplenty.

Where? 96-98 Pentonville Rd, London N1 9JB

When? Every Monday, 8pm. £1 entry per person

The one with the big prize

The Punch Tavern, City of London

For many quizzes, it's about the winning, not the taking part, but if you're looking to sing for your supper - or pay for your team's drinks by winning the quiz - then this quiz might be for you. It costs £10 per team to enter and the winner scoops the whole pot, which will result in a fairly good pub session afterwards

Where? 99 Fleet Street, EC4Y 1 DE

When? Every Tuesday, 6.30pm. £10 entry per team

Find out more: punchtavern.com

The fair one

Tufnell Park Tavern, Tufnell Park

Not feeling competitive? This quiz is ideal if you fancy a light spattering of general knowledge, without handbags at dawn over half points at the end of the night. With a points handicap for large teams, and "questions set at a level for enjoyment not bafflement", you're guaranteed a good chance at walking away with your head held high.

When? Tufnell Park Tavern, 162 Tufnell Park Road, London N7 0EE. £2 per person

Where? Every Monday, 8pm. £2 entry per person

The best bonus round

Star of Bethnal Green, Hackney

This is a personality quiz just as much as a knowledge quiz. Earn extra points in the music round by dancing, down a Sambuca to win a bar tab, and the bonus round can stretch from sheep impressions a test of impressions to singing an Elvis tune. Fun guaranteed.

Where? 359 Bethnal Green Road, E2 6LG

When? Every Tuesday, 8pm. £2 entry per person
