Patrick Dempsey is definitely going to star in the new Love Actually sequel


There’s a Love Actually sequel on the way – and Patrick Dempsey is joining the cast.

But, before we get into that, we know what you’re thinking: we already had a Love Actually sequel, didn’t we? Well, yes: earlier this year, we were treated to a 10-minute mini-movie on Red Nose Day – and, in it, we found out what happened to some of our favourite Love Actually characters.

Hugh Grant, Martine McCutcheon, Keira Knightley, Andrew Lincoln, Chiwetel Ejiofar, Rowan Atkinson, Liam Neeson, Bill Nighy, Colin Firth, Lúcia Moniz, Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Olivia Olson all finally got back together on our screens – and it was simply glorious.

“Enough,” we said, our curiosities sated. “Enough, now.”

Except it wasn’t enough. Not really. Because there were, of course, a few famous faces missing from the line-up – not least of all Linney, who played ‘Sarah with the brother who phones all the time’ in the original 2003 film.

Never fear: there’s another sequel on the way to set the world to rights.

Creator Richard Curtis is currently filming a US version of the Red Nose Day special, set to air on NBC 25 May.

Linney, as you will have noted in the above trailer, is back and still tied to her desk job. Only, this time, she isn’t breaking our hearts as she sobs into her computer keyboard (this is why we will forever hate you, ‘Karl who can’t have sex if someone has a brother’).

No, instead, she’s smiling, and happy, and laughing – and why shouldn’t she be? According to People, the graphic designer has finally moved on from Rodrigo Santoro’s character, thrown herself headfirst into making her career as wonderful as possible and found love in the form of Dempsey (Grey's Anatomy’s Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd himself).

Earlier this week, Emma Freud – who worked on the 2003 film with her husband Curtis – shared a behind-the-scenes clip of Dempsey filming in a kitchen.

“Ooh, look who has cropped up in the Red Nose Day USA version of Red Nose Day Actually,” she wrote.

“I would, obvs.”

It was also rumoured that Ben Affleck is also set to star in the sequel, leaving us beyond intrigued to see how the Gone Girl star will fit into all the whimsical rom-com fun.

However a spokesperson for Red Nose Day has since informed us that this is not the case.

“Ben IS part of the USA Red Nose Day show on May 25th. But not in the Love Actually sketch. He's doing something else, which is still very exciting of course!”

How mysterious. Roll on 25 May.
