Make way for proposal cakes: the best wedding trend ever?

proposal cake 6.jpg

Forget mountain top proposals and YouTube worthy flashmobs, there’s a whole new way to pop the question and it’s more Great British Bake Off than Don’t Tell The Bride.

Proposal cakes.

A dream come true for all those with a sweet tooth, the trend for scribing the question on a cake and presenting it to your partner is currently rising over in the States.

Just this week, one Kentucky couple made headlines with their impressively iced marriage proposal, after Alex Patterson asked his boyfriend of two years, Benjamin Mize, to marry him with a literary inspired three-tier sponge.

Patterson says he initially had the idea after deciding to combine the marriage proposal with Mize’s birthday.

“I decided to do a surprise birthday party for him, but I didn’t tell everyone coming it would also be a surprise engagement and party,” he tells BuzzFeed.

Patterson commissioned the cake from a local expert, explaining that he wanted to combine their shared interests in the details.

“We’re both literary minded. We’ve also developed a shared interest in board games, so I thought about the books and games that are most important to us.

“I felt like I was commissioning a sculpture, not a cake.”

Along with the books and games the pair have enjoyed together, Patterson also asked for references to TV shows they watch to be included, along with nods to their respective careers.

And though this was the first proposal cake Kentucky's Creative Cakes by Catherine has been asked to make, a quick social media search proves that it’s a trend on the up.

From sugared Tiffany boxes to meaningfully iced cupcakes, take a look at a few of the best proposal cakes we’ve spotted so far…
