Video shows man's heart rate soaring as he proposes to girlfriend

If you've ever been proposed to, you can no doubt remember the adrenaline of the exact moment you realised what was going on: the tears that sprung to your eyes, the shaking of your hands, the jittery thoughts (including "why, oh why, didn’t I paint my nails") coursing through your brain.

Those nerves go tenfold for the poor person who has to plan the proposal, keep it a secret, and then, most frightening of all, actually pop the question.

A new video has captured exactly how daunting the whole process can be, by showing the soaring heart rate of a man about to propose to his girlfriend.

A Reddit user who goes under the name "sesipikai" monitored his heartbeat over the 40 minutes in which he worked up the courage to ask his other half to be his wife, during a romantic trip to Rome.

The man logged his heartbeat using a Sports Tracker Heart Rate Monitor 2, which seems to us to be a far more ingenious way of using wearable technology than counting endless steps on the walk to work.

The 40-minute data is condensed into a 90-second video, during which you can see the man’s heartbeat remain fairly normal at around 80-90bpm (beats per minute) while the couple walk together, enjoy ice cream and even linger… but it then skyrockets at the big moment.

The video shows his heart rate jumping to 130bpm when he asked the big question – but thankfully, it slowed down once she said yes. The normal resting heart rate for an adult is between 60-100 bpm, so you can imagine how he must have been feeling.

This must be the most romantic scientific news we’ve heard in a while, so we have to salute ‘sesipikai’; who knows what he’ll use his wearable tech for at the wedding?
