Woman shuts down racist outburst on bus in best way possible

Public transport can be can be a nasty place. At this point, we're used to hearing stories of unpleasant outbursts, fights and general rude behaviour.

But yesterday, on a quiet bus in Wales, Facebook user Tom Bradbury has described how he witnessed the perfect shut down for a truly offensive comment made by one passenger to another.

In a post on Facebook, the 26-year-old events organiser told how he had been travelling on a replacement bus service between Newport and Cwmbran in south Wales, sitting near a Muslim woman wearing a niqab who was talking to her son in another language.

After a short time, a man sitting in front of the Muslim woman and her son became agitated and told them, "When you're in the UK you should really be speaking English."

He clearly wasn't expecting what happened next.

According to Tom, an older woman who overheard the upsetting comment didn't hesitate before delivering a killer comeback.

She simply informed him: "She's in Wales. And she's speaking Welsh."

Speaking to The Huffington Post UK, Bradbury said that he was “surprised” to hear the angry passenger “come out and say something like that so directly”.

Of the perfectly timed response, he said “it made the few of us in the surrounding seats laugh”.

The man who had made the offensive comment was suitably embarrassed. After the incident, Bradbury observed that he “seemed to shrivel up a little bit and mumble something to himself, but stayed quiet afterwards”.
