A Mean Girls musical is coming: you go Glen Coco

They teased us three years ago. Tina Fey teased us with her involvement. And now, the official announcement has come: a Mean Girls musical will grace a stage in Washington DC next year. Fetch.

On 3 October (International Mean Girls Day), the official social media accounts for the production confirmed the news, followed by a tweet compiled of several hashtags including:

#TheLimitDoesNotExist #YourMomsChestHair #SheDoesntEvenGoHere #YouCantSitWithUs #HerHairIsFullOfSecrets #OnWednesdaysWeWearPink #MeanGirlsDC

. . . Which we suspect might be the names of some of the musical numbers in the production (at least we hope they are).

The musical is to be written by Fey and composed by her husband, Jeff Richmond (who composed the titular song for The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) in collaboration with Tony-nominated lyricist Nell Benjamin – who wrote the songs for Legally Blonde the Musical.

The 2004 hit high school comedy, based on Rosalind Wiseman’s book, and adapted for the screen by Fey, has become a classic – which is fair to say after a dozen years.

Endlessly quotable and meme-worthy, the film – like Clueless – has become a staple of modern teenage-hood, and listed on every outdoor cinema event nationwide, because it’s simply so relatable, hilarious and – as it turns out - timeless.

Starring Rachel McAdams, Lizzy Caplan, Lacey Chabert, Amanda Seyfried - and Fey herself – the film also made the careers of much of its cast.

There is currently no cast listed for the musical, but we think Ellie Kemper would make an excellent Cady.

As for us? We’re booking our tickets to Washington DC as we write…
