Twitter users send messages of love, hope and solidarity to Europeans in the UK

Post-Brexit, you’d be forgiven for feeling pretty gloomy about life in the UK. The pound has crashed to levels not seen for over 20 years, it looks like Scotland could break away in order to remain in the EU, and – perhaps most worryingly of all – police believe that there has already been a steep rise in hate crime.

Figures released by the National Police Chiefs’ Council yesterday showed an increase of 57 per cent in reported incidents over the weekend, with Muslim, Polish and Jewish people being particularly targeted. “It’s no coincidence this has come off the back of the EU vote,” a police source told The Guardian.

But it’s in dark times that it becomes even more important to speak out against racism and intolerance, and Brits have been taking to social media to send messages of support to Europeans and other migrants in the UK.

Using hashtags including #PolesInUK, #HopeNotHate, #NotInMyName and #EuropeansWelcome, these tweets are a welcome reminder that, in the words of Jo Cox, “we are far more united than the things that divide us”.
