Meteorologist’s epic response to troll who called her maternity wear “disgusting”

Nothing brings us more joy than when a nasty body-shamer gets shutdown – especially when said shutdown occurs live on national TV.

So three cheers for Canadian meteorologist Kelsey McEwen, who had the perfect response to a Twitter user who branded her maternity wear “disgusting”.

Sharing the tweet – which read “I can’t believe the skin tight maternity attire… disgusting!” – with her 8,000 followers, McEwen wrote: “When what a 34 week pregnant woman is wearing is what someone finds 'disgusting' in this world... time to check your priorities.”

But she wasn’t finished with the troll quite yet.

The following day, a fired-up McEwen appeared live on the TV show where she works, Your Morning, to take the troll to task.

“You know what is disgusting? Not my wear, but racism and hate and bullying,” she said.

“I’m a firm believer that my body and your body is no one’s business but your own,” she continued. “Your body is not for anyone to talk about… it is not anyone else’s business but your own.”

The meteorologist, who is eight months pregnant, ended by reminding the viewers (and the vile troll in particular) that the way we look does not define us.

“What people say — if you let it build you up, the criticisms are going to tear you down — so let’s find other ways to talk to each other,” McEwan said.

“We’re better than this and we are so much more than how we look.”

McEwen’s experience struck a chord with a number of women, many of whom had also been body shamed while pregnant.

TV host Michelle Jobin tweeted: “I went through the same thing when I was pregnant & working on-air, and felt terrible… By speaking out against this bullying with the support of your team, it's progress, at least.”

Another twitter user added her support, writing: “A woman's pregnant body is far from disgusting, it is a beautiful thing to be able to create and grow another human being!”

Following on from the positive feedback she received for speaking out against the troll, McEwen also took to her Instagram feed to share a message in which she reiterated that we are more than how we look.

“I am kind, smart, hard working and most importantly: no better or worse than anyone else because of my appearance,” she wrote.

“Enough is enough. We are better.”

Kelsey McEwen: we salute you.
