Here’s the most popular Netflix genre in every region of the UK

You’ve got the food and drink covered, cancelled your plans without a jot of remorse and are now flicking through Netflix to settle on the night’s entertainment. What’s your square-eye poison of choice? Comedy, drama, entertainment, documentary, food porn perhaps?

Well, where you live might give some indication of what you’ll be binging on.

Netflix has analysed the viewing habits of UK subscribers from October 2016 to March 2017 (yep, of course there are people making notes on what you indulge in, secret trash watchers) and has released the genres of films and TV shows proving popular in each region when compared to the rest of the UK.

Fantasy is watched more in the Midlands than anywhere else in the UK, with titles such as Once Upon A Time, Shrek 2, Shadowhunters and Teen Wolf topping the list.

London loves a drama, with The Crown and House of Cards popular.

Northern Ireland joins the English capital on the drama-watching sofa, tuning into the likes of Suits, Sons of Anarchy and The Good Wife.

North-east, it’s all about the horror, with more viewers here than anywhere else clicking into shows such as American Horror Story, The Vampire Diaries and Dexter in their droves.

The north-west, meanwhile, mixes serious documentaries with unashamed entertainment, loving the likes of Amanda Knox and Making a Murderer, but also RuPaul’s Drag Race and Hell’s Kitchen.

People in the south-east are seemingly more into the melodrama of teen life than any other region, with films and TV shows such as Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, Gilmore Girls, Gossip Girl and Skins proving a hit in the region.

South-west is pretty into alternate universes, watching sci-fi favourites like Stranger Things, Doctor Who, The Hunger Games and Daredevil.

Scottish viewers are up for a range of comedy, with homegrown Still Game, Orange Is The New Black and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia proving hits.

And Wales loves a laugh too, sticking to Gavin & Stacey and The Big Bang Theory.

Interesting stuff. However, if we’re releasing data all over the place, we’d be interested to know whether anyone else seems to have a clear correlation between binge-watching Chef’s Table and amount of snacks consumed...
