David Bowie has died after an 18-month battle with cancer.

His son Duncan Jones confirmed the news alongside a picture of himself as a baby with his father and a statement was released on his official website this morning.

"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer," it says. "While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief."

The singer released his latest album Blackstar on Friday to coincide with 69th birthday.

The singer-songwriter and producer's career spanned over 40 years, where he dabbled in everything from glam rock to hard rock to soul to pop, punk and more.

Bowie will also be remembered for his influence on fashion having transformed himself into iconic characters such as Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and The Thin White Duke to coincide with his albums.
