Mindy Kaling reveals the small things that make her happy and the rules she lives by


As much-loved character, Mindy Lahiri, she is the epitome of a happy-go-lucky soul. But how does creator Mindy Kaling lift her mood and brighten her spirits?  

In an interview with author and happiness expert Gretchen Rubin for Good Housekeeping Mindy gives us a few tips we'll certainly take on board for the next time we're feeling blue including - exercising, letting go of bad feelings and possibly our favourite, a good night's sleep.

We all have quick fix mood boosters we keep in the reserve tank for the day we feel a little less than inspired. So, what’s Mindy’s?

"Running. Please understand, I am by no means an athlete. I run a 12- or 13- minute miles, which is about the pace of a real runner after a tragic leg accident," she quips. "It's not impressive, but it's my quick trigger for a good mood. That's the great thing about endorphins—you don't have to be in terrific shape to get them."

She also finds texting her parents usually makes her happy instantly. We can relate to that. "The second is texting my parents. They're working adorably hard at mastering it, and when I send them a text with young people's abbreviations or emoticons, they respond immediately. I don't know why, but it makes me feel great to be in touch with them this way.”

The Mindy Project star has carved a hugely successful career out of making people laugh - she was the only female writer to seven other male writers on the US version The Office and played the part of Kelly Kapoor on the show. So with what must be considered a dream job does Mindy ever work on being happier? "Honestly, if I heard myself saying, 'I've been actively working on my happiness,' I'd think, What an L.A. weirdo! But as I've gotten older, I've implemented rules in my life that I don't change.

"Take work: I get in at 6 A.M. Then, when I wrap as an actor, I stay on as a writer, sometimes until after 10 P.M. So I need to get nine uninterrupted hours of sleep on one weekend day. I won't be able to do that when I have kids, so I'm taking advantage now. Making sure I get enough rest is a way I work on being happy."

Asked if she has a happiness mantra Mindy reveals: "A friend's father once said to me, 'The best revenge is living well.' That's hard to hear if you're a vendetta-carrying hothead like I am.

"But whenever I feel slighted, I try to recall what he said, and that helps me let go of bad feelings. The time I waste on being mean could be better spent on thinking up a fun workout playlist or finding a cool recipe for my slow cooker. These are my ideas of 'living well' — you have to understand how awesome my slow cooker is." Cue yet more laughter! Great tips Mindy, we salute you.
