The Facebook Motherhood Challenge, which encourages people to “tag” those they think are great mothers, has come under criticism for putting unnatural expectations on women. Now one comedian has posted a response to it - and, whether you're a mother or not, you'll find it hilarious.
Instead of posting five snaps showing why she's “happy to be a mother”, as the challenge suggests, Ellie Taylor shared five photos celebrating the fact that she isn’t a mum.
The pictures show her getting a good night’s sleep and cuddling a bottle of red wine. “I was nominated by myself to post five pictures that make me happy to be a non-mother. Such special memories,” she wrote, intimating the often-smug tone of the Motherhood Challenge mothers.

The post got 117,000 likes on Facebook in one day and thousands of comments. “Thank you so much for this,” one woman wrote. “I was feeling like a bit of a non-motherhood oddball with all the motherhood pictures being posted.”
Another wrote: “Well done. I am a mother but I think stupid Facebook challenges like a Motherhood challenge is a load of elitist, patronising s****.”
The comedian admitted being surprised by the response to her post. “I saw loads of these Motherhood challenges pop up on my newsfeed so just took a few silly photos of me asleep as an alternative,” Ellie told The Metro.
“Obviously I had no idea it was going to be viewed quite so many times or I would’ve brushed my hair. My jaw never expected to be an Internet sensation but it’s bearing up well.”
Ellie isn’t alone in doing the Non-Motherhood Challenge. Helen Kirkbright posted five photos of her travels, showing how not having kids gives her more #Freedom.
While this imgur user showed off her spotless white sofa, adventurous lifestyle and glamorous nights out with her husband.
"Here's my five non-mom challenge," she wrote. "I actually like my husband after over six years of marriage, and we like to go on child-limited (aka... NICE) cruises around the world (get fancy for each other) and scuba dive.
"We flipped a house, sold it, and bought a Steinway piano with the profit (my dream... 23 years of playing). "Up until last month, I was a military flying weapons officer. Carpe diem! and... WHITE COUCH!"
