On Our Radar: Sleigh Bells

This time last year a little-known band called Sleigh Bells played to a sold-out crowd at Heaven.

A crowd who had, presumably, heard debut album Treats, devoured their electro-rock sensibilities and Brooklyn-cool synths. They’d marvelled at the unlikely pairing of sweet-toned Alexia Krauss, with former hardcore punk guitarist Derek E Miller (of Poison The Well fame) and inevitably come to this conclusion: it could never work live.

Wrong. So wrong. Because what followed for the next 30 minutes was a full-pelt audio guitar assault with necks wrung until they’ve snapped and Krauss’s treacle sweet harmonies strewn over the top. Both dance-friendly and achingly cool. And incredibly, incomparable to anything gone before.

So pan forward a year, as Miller and Krauss have just released second album Reign Of Terror, led by current single Comeback Kid and now everyone wants a piece of their glorious noise. It’s more of the same epic, instantly recognisable synth fury, but tempered with more intricate melodies and sweeter hooks. Their time is now – prepare to be converted to their brilliance.
