Pick your pig sausage service

Consumers choose which hog they eat

An enterprising sausage company based in Germany has taken personal service to a whole new level by allowing its customers to choose which pig goes into their meat.

Meine Kleine Farm offers a variety of swine for meat-lovers to select from.

Visitors to the site are invited to vote on their favourite pig, with the winner being made into sausages and other products.

Packs of sausages sold by the company also come complete with a picture of the animal they were produced from, as below.

The idea may seem a little too close for comfort for some, but Meine Kleine Farm's creator, Dennis Buchman, believes it makes the process of eating more personal.

"I think man has lost touch with his food," he told The Telegraph. "People eat a sausage like a carrot; without any thought about what goes into it."

The pigs featured come from a free-range farm near Berlin. Customers can follow online updates on their lives, such as particular markings or the date they are due to be slaughtered.

Buchman said ideally people would come to his farm and visit the pigs before tucking into a hog roast, "to show respect and reverence for the animals, and think about those that die for us."

What do you think? Is knowing the animal that goes into your food enlightening, or would you rather it remain an anonymous process? Share your thoughts on Twitter or in the comments section below.
