London and the South East

The five best things to do this weekend

Want to get out and about this weekend? Why not have a unique cinematic experience or get crafty with the W.I? Got something planned this weekend that's not on our list? Add it to the comments section below.

EXPERIENCE SECRET CINEMA

1. EXPERIENCE SECRET CINEMA

What: Secret Cinema

When: Monday, time TBC

Where: TBC

Get one of the last few tickets for London’s most unique cinema experience. For two weeks, film lovers need to dress up, and put their faith in the SC crew as what you’ll see and how you’ll see it is a complete, er, secret. Rest assured, you’ll experience a film like never before.

£22.75, register at secretcinema.org

LEARN CRAFTS FROM THE W.I.

2. LEARN CRAFTS FROM THE W.I.

What: Women’s Institute Craft Day

When: Saturday, 11am-4pm

Where: The Women’s Library, 25 Old Castle Street, E1 7NT

With the Women’s Institute coming back into vogue, learn from the masters at this daylong celebration of the W.I. From patchwork quilting to lacework, they might even persuade you to join up.

SEE LOVE THROUGH THE AGES

3. SEE LOVE THROUGH THE AGES

What: Wives and Sweethearts

When: Friday-Sunday, 10am-5.30pm

Where: National Army Museum, Royal Hospital Road, Chelsea, SW3 4HT

Don’t be put off by the name of the museum. This is a touching new exhibition about 200 years of relationships between soldiers and the wives and girlfriends they’ve left behind told via letters, photos and tokens of love.

Free, nam.ac.uk

BE PART OF THE COCKTAIL REVOLUTION

4. BE PART OF THE COCKTAIL REVOLUTION

What: Experimental Cocktail Club

When: Friday and Saturday, 6pm-late

Where: 13a Gerrard Street, Chinatown, W1D 5PS

It’s London’s sexiest new cocktail bar – part brothel chic, part French speakeasy – and if you can find it (look for a shabby old door, next to a brass plaque saying ECC) toast yourself with a very old-school Martini. Half of all tables are for walk in customers, so walk in early.

EMBRACE THE SPOKEN WORD

5. EMBRACE THE SPOKEN WORD

What: Story Studio

When: Sunday, 7.30pm

Where: Komedia, 44 - 47 Gardner Street, Brighton, BN1 1UN

This quirky new night promises an evening full of playlets, monologues, short films, and ‘vaudeville flash fiction’ to explore the spoken word, all on the theme, Hearth and Home.

About our London writer

6. About our London writer

Helen Bownass

London’s streets may not be paved with gold, but as far as I’m concerned they might as well be. I love this city I live in. It’s crazy, hectic, beautiful, cool. There’s something to do every hour of every day. Things you didn’t even know existed. Places I certainly never imagined did. And I’m a lucky girl because in my job as a writer for some of the country’s biggest magazines I get to do them before anyone else. A lucky girl who also rubbish at playing netball, in a book group that mainly talks about men, a Japanophile and scared of parrots.
