Anchors away: are you ready for London's first pop-up gin dock?

“The proper union of gin and vermouth is a great and sudden glory; it is one of the happiest marriages on earth, and one of the shortest lived.”

Bernard De Voto knew exactly what he was talking about when it came to gin; there’s no denying that the juniper-based drink is just the tonic for balmy summer evenings.

And, with a mid-August heatwave on the horizon, it seems as if there’s no better time to treat ourselves to a glass of our favourite tipple.

Well, we have good news for Londoners - are you ready for the city's first-ever gin dock?

Plymouth Gin are teaming up with Rivington Greenwich to create an extra-special nautical-themed outdoor gin terrace.

When the ‘Pennant Flag’ is hoisted (just as naval ships used to do when they wanted to invite others to gather for drinks on board), happy hour is in full swing, with gin and tonics costing just £5.

There will be also be an array of seven oh-so-quaffable cocktails on offer, all inspired by the maritime heritage of Greenwich.

There's The Pennant, which muddles gin, sloe gin, apricot brandy, lemons and oranges for a unique and fruity taste.

Or, if you fancy something with a little more punch to it, there's the Apple Smash; think pink grapefruit, lemon, mint, and apple, along with a healthy splash of your favourite alcoholic beverage.

Each and every single one of them sounds like a recipe for gin-soaked perfection. Which is, in our mind, the best and only kind of perfection there is.

However, as is always the case with pop-ups, there is a time limit to all of the gin-based fun; the Plymouth Gin Dock will only be there until 18 September.

Time to hoist anchors and set sail for Greenwich, we think…

Then again, if you’re obsessed with all things gin-based, there’s plenty of treats for you to sample across the capital and beyond this year.

There’s the 90-minute ‘gin safari’ at Eccentric Mr Fogg’s Tavern in London, or the ‘make your own gin’ tour in Plymouth. If you fancy something a tad more luxurious, you can opt for a chauffeur-driven tour of five gin distilleries in your favourite city, or, if you’re trying to save your pennies, team up with a pal and take advantage of the 2-for-1 G&T deal that Slug & Lettuce offer every single Thursday across the country.

There’s even a giant four-floor gin hotel opening in November, for those who fancy a nap after they’ve sampled the wares at Portobello Road Gin.

In short, there’s a lot on offer for gin aficionados.
