A reboot of 90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is happening and Will Smith is involved

All hail Mr Will Smith; the 90s reboot craze has just notched up another remake in the form of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and the man himself is at the helm.

Apologies if the news has jolted you from the business of chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool, but it’s rather a big deal for all fans of the comedy TV show.

After wrapping in 1996 following six seasons which saw the Fresh Prince uprooted from his life in Philadelphia, and sent to live with his well-off family in Bel-Air, Will Smith has decided it’s time to revisit the story.

But, if you were hoping to see the old cast reunited there may be disappointment ahead.

Rather than pick up the original characters’ stories some 20 years later, the reboot will centre around an entirely new family.

According to the report from tvline.com, Will Smith’s production company Overbrook Entertainment is in the process of putting together a ‘modern day retelling of the show’s fish-out-of-water tale’, which will ‘maintain the spirit of Fresh Prince’.

It’s thought the project is still in very early stages, and that Will be acting as executive producer only, rather than starring in the new show.

There’s also no word yet on whether Alfonso Ribeiro will be making an appearance, to bring some of that Carlton Banks energy to the spin-off.
