Bacon shortage predicted for the UK

Over the past year, bacon has become the unusual ingredient of choice for adventurous foodies – from the Bacon Sundae and milkshake to Nigella Lawson’s bacon brownies. Add the hot dog’s recent upmarket make-over (courtesy of Bubbledogs and Big Apple Hotdogs), Pitt Cue Co’s pulled pork, and the Vietnamese Banh Mi baguette into the mix and it seems there’s few food trends that aren’t based around the humble pig.

But our penchant for pork products may have to be put on hiatus – as Britain's National Pig Association has predicted a worldwide shortage of bacon and pork next year.

Declining pig herds and a global failure of maize and soya harvests have plunged Pig farmers into loss – with British supermarkets being urged to pay pig farmers more to keep them in production and protect consumers from shortages and prices hikes.

So could 2013 be the year we say goodbye to (or pay a little more for) our Saturday morning bacon sandwich? Hopefully not. The NPA’s ‘Save Our Bacon’ campaign advises meat-loving shoppers to select pork and bacon with the British independent Red Tractor logo – as an increase in demand for British produce may help prevent price hikes. Time to start ‘bringing home the bacon’ then…
