Last year was full of exciting and wacky hybrids. Do you remember those gorgeously gooey marshmallow shot glasses or the dessert lasagne filled with cannoli cream and nutella?
Well we're kicking off 2015 with another mouth-watering, mind-blowing culinary creation. Behold, cheesecake doughnuts.
The wickedly talented food blogger Amy Erickson of ohbiteit.com created the doughnut and cheesecake hybrid when she discovered Philadelphia sold a ready-made cheesecake filling (only available in America).
She decided the best thing to do was to pipe it in a freshly-made, crispy doughnut and the results were more than delicious.
"These doughnuts are the BEST doughnut(s) I've ever had," wrote Amy. "I was only going to have my one "taste-test bite" and before I knew what happened..BOOM. The entire thing was gone".
Since a ready-made cheesecake filling isn't on offer in the UK, we've found an alternative recipe so that you can create the dish at home.
Ingredients, serves 6
For the doughnut
70g (2 1/2 oz) butter
500g (1 1/4 lb) plain flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
70g (2 1/2 oz) sugar
1 egg 260ml (9 fl oz) milk vegetable oil for frying
To make the doughnuts, follow the method here.
For the cheesecake filling
500g cream cheese
770g (2 cans) condensed milk
250ml fresh cream, whipped
To make the cheesecake filling follow steps 5 and 6 here, then pour the mix into a pastry bag or piping bag and fill the doughnuts until it slightly oozes out.
Amy drizzled sweet caramel sauce over the doughnuts and then sprinkled biscuit crumbs to create an authentic cheesecake experience.
Serve them as a sweet tea-time snack or dessert.
