It's no longer enough for a food blogger to merely list recipes.

Today's digital gourmands are fine tuned in the art of food porn, coupling creative styling with top-of-the-range photography.

Not only that, they also have an arsenal of knowledge at their disposal, from tips on seasonal ingredients and nutrition to fresh and original meal ideas that cover all manner of specialties, including gluten-free, vegan and more. 

We're all familiar with the alchemy on show at Deliciously Ella, Hemsley + Helmsley and other leading sites. But here are a few other names making waves on the foodie scene, that you might not be aware of. 

From a Vancouver adventurer to an Italian farmhand, come discover a new generation of scintillating food bloggers to add to your meal-time inspiration list:

Hortus Cuisine


Visit for: a modern twist on rustic Italian cuisine

Graphic designer Valentina, 23, has the kind of life many of us hanker after, on a farm in the heart of the Italian countryside. 

Her entire blog has a rustic, whimsical edge with low-light, artistic photos that really sell the concept of un-fussy, wholesome Italian food.

But it's not just fairytales at play here; five years ago Valentina suffered a hormonal imbalance that left her on heavy meds. An understanding of good nutrition helped pull her through and her recipes are infused with knowledge of the benefits of an unprocessed, seasonal diet.

They also give a modern, fresh edge to traditional Italian cooking, with ideas such as Tuscan walnut rosemary bread and spring vegetable lasagne with artichokes, asparagus spears and Champignon mushrooms. 

Read it and weep for a simpler way of living.

Visit for: Lebanese food, made with love

Delicious Lebanese cuisine is the chosen art form of Maureen Abood, a Michigan-based writer and devoted foodie. 

Maureen has a very large American-Lebanese family whom she loves to cook and eat with, and her blog radiates an infectious sense of love, warmth and belonging.

"This blog is a place where we come together to share Lebanese cuisine, which in turn is tied, inextricably, to stories…and family…and love," she writes. "Thanks so much for being here, and know that just as most every Lebanese woman loves to do, I’m welcoming you with a warm hug and a plate of something good to eat as you walk through my door."

Come here for the heart-warming vibe, yes, but the recipes are also irresistible - and beautiful to look at. Take this cherry dish made with parsley, walnuts and pomegranate vinaigrette. Or these succulent-looking lamb kofta burgers

My New Roots


Visit for: inspiring foodie narratives 

Holistic nutritionist Sarah B started this blog in 2007 after she moved from Toronto to Copenhagen and found herself temporarily unable to work for legal reasons. 

"This blog has been the place for me to share the edible inspirations from my playtime in the kitchen, and my deep love for whole foods," she says. "The recipes and ideas you’ll find here revolve around my plant-based way of eating, and I hope that through the simple and delicious dishes I create, you too will discover a whole new world of flavour and nourishment."

The great thing here is the level of detail and context Sarah gives to each of her recipes. Take her post on grilled pumpkin bread with honeycomb. It comes with a beautifully crafted story of how Sarah sourced a honeycomb frame, along with a wealth of info on the properties of this "mildly sweet and mellow-tasting" treat. And the photos are so intricate and glossy you could practically eat them off the page.

Sarah's recipes are divided into seasons, as well as meals throughout the day. She even has a section on raw food creations, with wonderful names such as mango cashew sunshine bites.


Green Kitchen Stories

When you have mouthwatering recipes such as passionfruit and coconut macarons and orange and ginger chocolate truffles to choose from, you know you're in safe hands. Stockholm-based couple David and Luise epitomise the kind of clean-living, relaxed lifestyle that we all crave in the midst of our busy, stressful urban routines. 

A magazine art director, David looks after the food styling and photography. Luise describes herself as "the hippie-health-minded of the two of us" and is training to become a nutritional therapist. 

Their blog tracks their adventures to "cook and eat healthy and simple vegetarian food with natural ingredients, whole grains, good fats, fruit and vegetables". The recipes here feel very personal, with delightful little insights into the experiences that have shaped their lives - all of which invariably feature free-spirited moments of celebration and travel. 

For example, this frozen pink cheesecake idea came about as way of marking David and Luise's decision to up sticks and explore the world with their baby girl Elsa in tow. And in the course of this linguine recipe, David explains how he met Luise; "I moved to Rome to become Italian and ended up having a baby in Stockholm with the most beautiful danish girl I have ever seen," he writes. 

It's the most gorgeous lifestyle story you can imagine, with recipes rolled in. Enjoy!

Visit for: fun, wacky fusion ideas

Vancouver epicurean Stephanie Le is the brains behind this unpretentious blog, which simply aims to celebrate "the awesomeness of food".

There's no great philosophy or life statement at play here; you get the feeling that Steph's just on a riot of a culinary adventure and is game enough to let us in on it.

She cooks up "dishes inspired by favourite restaurants, takeout, or just whatever is in the fridge". 

But don't be misled by irreverent, throwaway tone. This food blog is overflowing with innovative fusion recipes and exciting ideas that you take one look at and think, "yes, PLEASE" or, "I could never think of that".

We're talking things like Beeramisu (tiramisu, but with beer) and Vietnamese caramelized pork belly pasta.

It's an unapologetic celebration of the fun-ness of food, and we love it. 


The vanilla bean blog


Visit for: warm, soulful dessert recipes

If there's one blog that panders exclusively to our sweet tooth, The Vanilla Bean Blog is it.

It's the baby of Sarah Kieffer, a self-taught baker from Minneapolis who is something of a zeitgeist when it comes to predicting exactly how to get our taste buds stimulated.

Every single one of her recipes reads like an ode to dessert eating, with little glimmers of Sarah's thoughts on cake and life in general, along with  a wealth of cooking tips.

We love the sounds of these pear tarts with honey bourbon creme fraiche, or how about a round of fig and coffee ice-cream with cacao nibs to get the party started? 

"It’s not about eating or creating just for the sake of doing so," says Sarah. "There is something deeper, something soulful that happens when we slice the cake, when we break the bread. There is taste and smell that draws out memories, binding us to those present, those past." 

Hear, hear. 


Love and Lemons

"Eat well, love food" is the kind of motto we can all get behind.

Jeannine and Jack live in Austin, Texas, and like to blog about their wholesome, globally-inspired approach to cooking. Jeannine mostly writes the recipes, while Jack has the crucial role of taste-testing them. 

They love to travel and many of their creations are inspired by their globe-trotting experiences.

There's always a little waft of the unexpected in the ideas you find here, yet they're never so complicated as to put you off. It's this 'Oh, I hadn't thought of that but it looks amazing' effect that has amassed the blog a fiercely loyal following since its launch four years ago. 

Most of the recipes posted are vegetarian, and all come with a sense of life-affirming goodness. A few of our favourites include ginger miso soup with Tokyo turnips and pear and arugula chickpea salad.

Visit for: a healthy take on indulgent treats

Margie is a London-based private chef whose clients include Temperley London, Tory Burch and Calgary Avansino. In-between catering for well-heeled and well-connected, she blogs a wealth of nourishing snack and meal ideas.

Many of these are vegan or use sugar alternatives, so you can search for wholesome versions of everything from lasagne (made with avocado pesto) to gluten-free chocolate roulade.

Margie actually took a Masters at Oxford and studied law before she realised food was her calling. "Cooking and food was all I thought about," she says. "After realising that food was a passion I wanted to transform into a career, I made a culinary about-turn and headed off to Ireland’s world-renowned Ballymaloe Cookery School."

Her blog really promotes the idea of healthy living as an achievable ideal. You don't feel you have to hold back with recipes such as salted chocolate and peanut butter cookies and ricotta pancakes on the cards. 

And the meal ideas cover all manner of eventualities, from warming stews to quick 'n comforting soups. 


The yellow house


Visit: poetic, joyful food writing

Sarah B is international public health worked based near Washington DC, who also happens to love cooking and food.

Her blog's name was originally inspired by the yellow house she lived in in the city. She's now based in rural Virginia but the topics that inspire her recipes remain the same; "things that strike me as beautiful or unusual". 

Sarah's writing has a crisp, lyrical quality to it and it's easy to be seduced by her meanderings that flow seamlessly from food to travel to locality and gardening, and back to food again.

She has a real eye for visceral detail and is quick to pick up on things like the "life-giving brightness" of the tangelos used in this buttermilk scone recipe, or the "unwieldy windfall of stone fruit" that inspired this peach and cornmeal upside-down cake.  At the same time, she's also witty and knowing; "let’s talk about beans and definitely not about feelings, feminism, guns, or country music," she begins one post on beans (the pinto kind).
